Taking Care of Your New Puppy

NeuteringsTaking Care of Your Puppy in Bunbury and Eaton.

Getting a new puppy is an exciting time. It’s a new family member, exercise partner, therapist, best friend and play mate all rolled into one bundle of excitement.

By the time you have even got your puppy home, you’ll have been bombarded with a heap of conflicting and confusing information. What do you feed your dog, how much, how often, what flea control should you use, do you need heartworm prevention, etc.

Here’s a quick rundown on what we recommend.

Getting the feeding right is critical. For the first few days, keep feeding your puppy what has been recommended by the breeder. Changing the food on the first day can cause extra stress.

We recommend Royal Canin food, but any good quality food will be ok. Please avoid the cheap stuff – it’s cheap for a reason. Poor nutrition for puppies can increase the risk of bone and joint problems, and cause multiple health issues.

Be aware of advice from breeders. If it doesn’t sound right, give us a call an we can talk you through things. We see a lot of dogs being fed Weetbix (I’m not sure at what point in a dogs evolution wheat became a full meal), and even one dog where the breeder advised the owners not to let it drink tap water (the breeder advised raspberry cordial).

We recommend feeding three times daily until at least 3-4 months old (depending on breed), then twice daily until 6-12 months old. As a general rule, the larger the breed the more frequent the feeds should be. Once the dog is 12 months old, they can be fed once or twice daily.

Parasite Control:

  • Intestinal worms – fortnightly until 12 weeks of age, then monthly until 6 months of age. After that, it’s every three months for life
  • Flea control – we recommend starting a good quality flea control product from 8 weeks of age. We recommend Bravecto, which is just given once every three months as an oral chew. It’s easy to give, is very effective at controlling fleas AND ticks, and appears to control mites as well
  • Heartworm – Heartworm prevention is best given as a long-acting injection, given at 12 weeks of age, 6 months of age, at 15 months of age, then annually to tie in with your pets annual health check and vaccines

EVERY puppy needs to be adequately vaccinated.

The first vaccination is normally given at 6-8 weeks of age. This will normally be done with the breeder.

The second vaccine is given at 10-12 weeks of age. We recommend giving the C5 vaccine at this point (Parvo, Distemper, Hepatitis and Canine Cough) so the dog can be safely socialised two weeks later.

A third vaccine of Parvo, Distemper and Hepatitis is given at 14-16 weeks of age.

We strongly recommend pet insurance, especially when your puppy is young. During the first 12 months of age is when many orthopaedic injuries occur (puppies are clumsy and break things quite often), and many developmental problems may become apparent. Of course, we recommend they stay insured for life, but if your budget won’t stretch that far then please prioritise the first 12 months.

First Vet Visit:

We recommend you have your puppy checked by a vet within 48 hours of picking it up. This gives you the peace of mind that you’ve got a healthy dog, and allows any problems to be dealt with promptly. In the last few months, we have seen new puppies sold with ear infections, skin problems, dental issues, and even a broken leg!

At this first visit, if your puppy is over 8 weeks of age and healthy, we can sign you up for 4 weeks free insurance with Petplan.

Healthy Pets Club:

We know this is a lot to take in, which is why we have created the Healthy Pets Club. For an annual or monthly fee, your puppy will receive a free puppy check, all its vaccinations and heartworm treatments, worm and flea treatments delivered to you when the doses are due, plus discounts on microchipping and desexing.

Healthy Pets Plus members will also get free unlimited primary consultations (excluding out of hours consultations), so any time you’re worried about your pet you can have them checked by one of our vets. Healthy Pets Club

Healthy Pets Club

We know that everyone wants to take the best care possible of their pets. But it can be hard to keep track of when they’re due for flea and worm treatment, or their next vaccination.

We know that life is busy, and as pet owners ourselves we know how hard it is to keep track of when everything is due then find the time to do what is needed.

This is why we are about to launch a new style of Vet Care program for the pets of the Bunbury region called the Healthy Pets Club. We will be launching the new club on Monday 18th July.

Our Healthy Pets Club is unique for the Bunbury area, and is designed to make pet care as easy as possible while saving you money.

We have created two levels of Healthy Pets Club membership, Standard and Plus.

What’s Included?

Both levels include your pet’s vaccinations, heartworm prevention, intestinal wormers and flea control for 12 months. You also get free nail clipping and anal gland checks, plus discounts on consultations, microchipping and desexing if needed. To make things as easy as possible for you, we’ll post your pet’s flea and worm treatments out to you when it’s due, so you don’t need to keep track of when it’s due. You’ll just need to give it when it arrives.

Our Healthy Pets Plus program includes all the above features, plus free primary consultations and 6 monthly wellness checks.

Who is the Healthy Pets Club for?

Let’s start by talking about the pets that won’t benefit from the program. We know it’s not for everyone, so it might not be for you if:

  • Your insurance policy covers routine health care
  • You’re moving out of the area in the next 12 months (though if you sign up then need to move, we can still send your parasite control to your new address)
  • You don’t believe in vaccinating your pet or using parasite control, or you can’t use the included products for any reason

Our Healthy Pets Club is for a wide range of pet owners. We have designed it to have a lot of benefits, so it might be for you if you fall into any of the following categories:

  • You vaccinate your pet and treat them for parasites such as heartworm, fleas and worms
  • You want your pet’s parasite treatment delivered to your door when it is due, so you’ll never forget to protect your pet
  • Your pet needs to see a vet at least once per year, other than for vaccinations
  • You want to provide the best care possible for your pet
  • Your pet is on regular medication
  • You want to spread the cost of your pet’s preventative health care over 12 equal monthly payments
  • You want to save money on your pet’s health care

What does Healthy Pets Club Membership Cost?

Because your pet will be singing up for 12 months, we are able to offer services within the Healthy Pets Club at a significant discount. Even with the Healthy Pets Club Standard, you’re guaranteed to save money. If your pet becomes unwell and needs to visit us, you’ll save even more. For example, a 25kg dog in the Healthy Pets Plus Club will save $164 based on two primary consultations. That means their 6 monthly wellness check and one more consultation, both of which are free for Healthy Pets Plus club Members.

We offer two payment options. You can pay for the full 12 months up front, which will give you the biggest savings. For those who want to spread the cost throughout the year, we also offer a monthly payment plan. There is a $5/month administration fee built into the monthly prices, so it does cost $60pa more than paying up front, but still saves you money.

Puppy and Kitten prices include the full set of puppy or kitten vaccinations, and isn’t weight dependant. For adult dogs, the cost depends on their weight. Please see the table below for prices.

Does this replace Pet Insurance?

No. This program is designed as a wellness program, not an insurance policy. We still recommend keeping your pet insured in case they experience a serious injury or illness.

If your pet is insured, it is still worth signing up to the Healthy Pets Club. You’ll still ssave money on their preventative health care, you’ll have all the benefits of parasite control delivered to your door, and for minor illness and injury where you don’t reach your policy excess you’ll still see great benefits.

If you have an insurance policy which covers your annual vaccinations, this program would probably not give you sufficient benefit. If you’re not sure, have a chat to one of our staff.

I’m currently a Pet Care Rewards Member. How does this affect me?

Our Healthy Pets club will offer greater savings and better health care for pets, so we are gradually moving everyone across to the new program when their Pet Care Rewards Membership expires. For anyone who is a Pet Care Rewards member, your membership will continue for the full 12 months.

If you have any Pet Care Rewards credit owed to you, that will still be available for you to use on services at our clinic as before, even if you choose not to become a Healthy Pets Club member. We will make sure your Pet Care Rewards Credit isn’t lost in the transition.

If you have already used both consultations in your Pet Care rewards membership, you may choose to terminate that early and change across to the Healthy Pets Club. For most people, that will give you even greater savings, and any Pet Care rewards credits will be moved across for use towards our services or as payment towards the Healthy Pets Club. If you would prefer to remain with the Pet Care Rewards program for the full 12 months you’ll still experience all the benefits of that program, and we’ll transfer your rewards across at the end.

Which Products are Used?

Vaccines: Your pet will be vaccinated against the diseases which are appropriate for your pet. If your dog needs protection against Canine Cough, or your outdoor cat needs vaccinating against Cat AIDS (FIV) or Feline Leukaemia Virus, that will be included. There is no surcharge for these higher level vaccines.

Heartworm: For dogs, we use Proheart SR-12, a long acting heartworm injection. We normally start heartworm prevention at 12 weeks of age, and continue through the life of the dog. For cats, the spot-on product Revolution, which also treats fleas and roundworms gives good heartworm protection.

Fleas: Dogs will receive Bravecto, which needs to be given every three months to control fleas. Bravecto also protects against our local ticks for two months. Cats will receive Revolution monthly, which covers fleas, heartworm and roundworm.

Intestinal Worms: Dogs will receive an oral all-wormer every three months. Because Revolution treats roundworm, cats will receive a tape-wormer every three months. If you find you have trouble giving your pet a tablet, feel free to book an appointment with our nurses and they’ll give the tablet at no additional cost.

What if my pet has a pre-existing condition? Can I still join?

Yes, you can still join. In fact, if your pet has a pre-existing condition you will likely get the greatest benefit. If you join the Healthy Pets Plus Club your 6 monthly rechecks are covered, and any primary consultations are free. If your pet needs to come in for a recheck, you will receive 10% off all revisits.

A primary consultation is when we see the animal for the first time for a particular problem. Subsequent consultations for the same problem seen within 8 weeks from the primary consult will be charged a revisit consultation. Please note: after hours consultations are not included in the Healthy Pets Club plans.

So what does this mean for your pet if they have a repeat problem such as ear infections? Your pet will come in for a primary consultation when it flares up. This consultation will be free for Healthy Pets Plus members, saving you nearly $75. If we perform any diagnostic tests such as ear smears, or treatments such as ear flushing under anaesthetic, these procedures will be charged and paid for as normal. If you come back for a recheck at the end of any medication course, you will receive a 10% discount on the revisit, saving another $5.50. If the infection has cleared then another infection occurs three months later, the first consult will be considered a primary consultation again and hence will be free..
